TCC Speech and Debate Team Wins National Championship

In March, 10 members of the TCC Speech and Debate Team traveled to Berry College in Rome, Ga. to compete at the Novice National Forensics Association 2020 National Championships. The team proved once again that they are one of the strongest forensics programs in the country. The squad from TCC outpaced other universities and colleges from around the country, winning both the Open Division Title and the Division 1 Title. Other notable schools in attendance included strong programs from University of Alabama, Bowling Green State University, Belmont University and dozens of others. The win was built on a strong collective effort by all team members. "Winning this title was one of the proudest moments of my life," stated Zachary Boltz. "I can honestly say that I'll never forget this." Boltz was recognized as the top individual speaker in the country, winning Pentathlon for cumulative overall points. Boltz advanced five events to finals, capturing national titles in both Slam Poetry and Duo Interpretation with Faith MacGregor. MacGregor, who will be stepping up as team captain next year, displayed leadership in action by advancing six events to finals and placing fourth in Pentathlon. "After spending months rehearsing and memorizing our speeches it felt so amazing to stand up there and be recognized as national champions with all of my teammates and friends," said MacGregor. The team had a number of other national champs and runners-up. Zira Brown brought home the national title in After Dinner Speaking, was national runner-up in Slam Poetry and placed fifth in Pentathlon. Madison Reed was national runner-up in Program Oral Interpretation and advanced three events to finals. Patrick Sternad was also the national runner-up in Informative Speaking. To cap the tournament, the team won the national title in Readers' Theatre through the collective effort from the MacGregor sisters, Sternad, Boltz, Reed and Brown. "This is one of the most remarkable teams I've ever had the good fortune of coaching," said Theatre Professor and Director of Forensics John Schultz. "All season they pushed each other and supported each other. The process allowed them to tap into the depth and breadth of their talent. We needed the contribution of every single person to capture the title. It is one of the best experiences I've had working with this program in the past 28 years."
