TCC Commencement Ceremony holds Family Ties

Tallahassee Community College will hold its commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center. Nearly 500 out of 1,100 students graduating from the Spring, Fall and Summer semesters are marching across the stage to receive their degrees. Among those graduates, include three sets of parent-child duos and international students from the Caribbean island of St. Maarten. There are two mother-and-daughter pairs and a father-and-son pair graduating together. The families said despite some life obstacles earning a post-secondary credential was imperative. They said TCC provided them the tools to receive their degrees, but completing their journey with a relative made it much more enjoyable. "I have been given some news that I had cancer and I was only given a certain amount of time to live." Mark Moten said. "I surpassed that time and I challenged my son to get his degree. And sometimes when you ask your kids to get something and they look at you and say 'well you never finished' so I decided we'll both go." Mark and his son Demaurio Moten both majored in business with a goal of managing their own funeral home. Chyenne Reynolds and her mother Stephanie Reynolds said that TCC was the best choice due to its affordability. "It's a more affordable option," Chyenne said. "It's easy to get my A.A. done at TCC for a lower cost and go wherever I need to go afterwards." Stephanie and Chyenne Reynolds plan to pursue their B.S. degrees in the fall. Carice Cartwright said her daughter Madison Cartwright was her encouragement to complete her associate degree at the College. "I felt overwhelmed by going back to school after being out of it for 20 years," Carice said. "It was pretty interesting to go back and try to learn again but it makes you feel good about yourself when you finish." International student Jahmilah Lake said attending TCC allowed her to experience the American campus lifestyle. She said faculty and staff have been very supportive during her time at the College. "They're for you getting educated," Lake said. "All you have to do is show that you are interested and show that you're willing to learn."
